Euros First Round of Games – Reviewed

Well how can we summarise the first week of the 2016 Euro Championships.

Lets try that in the context of the Varsity Competition.

Home Nations: One Win, 1 draw and 1 defeat is certainly mixed. Wales will be ‘cock-a-hoop’ after gaining a valuable 3 points. Group B could be thrown wide open when England play Wales on Thursday 16th June. Wales will be buoyant from the superb win over Slovakia, and England will want to make up for a disappointing draw with Russia.

Northern Ireland played well with little reward and will be up for their next challenge against Ukraine who match them with no points after a tough game against Germany.

Goals have been in relatively short supply so far but we have entries from a number of people who picked Bale and Giroud. Both players started their individual quests for the Golden Boot.

The highlight of the first round has to be Iceland’s fantastic  display against Portugal. A great fightback and they could have ‘nicked’ it at the end too.

As to the winner? Italy played well beating a well-fancied Belgian side and France had no early woes as hosts with a good win in their opening match. Germany were assured and Croatia impressed.

Maybe it’s too early to be predict at this stage, so here we go into the second phase of games.
